National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Did you know? May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and we couldn’t be more excited! Staying active and fit any age is important for so many reasons. Our favorite (though we are a bit biased) is staying fit through roller skating at Orbit Skate Center.

The Roller Skating Association International has pointed out that roller skating is a great form of aerobic exercise and cardio exercise and helps with heart health and overall physical fitness. In today’s post, we have put together a few awesome physical benefits of roller skating and having fun while exercising is #1!

Calorie burning, body fat reduction, increased leg strength, and other benefits make roller skating equivalent to jogging.
One hour of moderate roller skating can burn over 300 calories!
More aggressive skating (speed skating) can increase the amount of calories burned.
The more the skate, the better you feel!
Exercising can be tough to do but roller skating makes it fun!
Gym Memberships can be expensive – roller skating at Orbit is an affordable option!
Skating with friends and staying fit – win,win!Fitness-300x268 (1)

Pi Skate

National Pi Day
Friday March 14

Get it Pi is 3.14

Come see what we have in store for you. Did you know:
The number π is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter and is approximately equal to 3.14159. It has been represented by the Greek letter “π” since the mid-18th century, though it is also sometimes spelled out as “pi” (/paɪ/).
Being an irrational number, π cannot be expressed exactly as a common fraction. Consequently, its decimal representation never ends and never settles into a permanent repeating pattern. The digits appear to be randomly distributed, although no proof of this has yet been discovered. Also, π is a transcendental number – a number that is not the root of any nonzero polynomial having rational coefficients. The transcendence of π implies that it is impossible to solve the ancient challenge of squaring the circle with a compass and straight-edge.
Fractions such as 22/7 and other rational numbers are commonly used to approximate π.
For thousands of years, mathematicians have attempted to extend their understanding of π, sometimes by computing its value to a high degree of accuracy. Before the 15th century, mathematicians such as Archimedes and Liu Hui used geometrical techniques, based on polygons, to estimate the value of π. Starting around the 15th century, new algorithms based on infinite series revolutionized the computation of π. In the 20th and 21st centuries, mathematicians and computer scientists discovered new approaches that – when combined with increasing computational power – extended the decimal representation of π to, as of late 2011, over 10 trillion (1013) digits.[1] Scientific applications generally require no more than 40 digits of π, so the primary motivation for these computations is the human desire to break records, but the extensive calculations involved have been used to test supercomputers and high-precision multiplication algorithms.
Because its definition relates to the circle, π is found in many formulae in trigonometry and geometry, especially those concerning circles, ellipses, or spheres. It is also found in formulapie day from other branches of science, such as cosmology, number theory, statistics, fractals, thermodynamics, mechanics, and electromagnetism. The ubiquitous nature of π makes it one of the most widely known mathematical constants, both inside and outside the scientific community: Several books devoted to it have been published, the number is celebrated on Pi Day, and record-setting calculations of the digits of π often result in news headlines. Attempts to memorize the value of π with increasing precision have led to records of over 67,000 digits

Health Benefits of Roller Skating

Comparing roller skating to walking is like comparing apples to oranges — which one is better depends on your personal tastes. In determining which movement is the better exercise, analyze your personal expectations and physical limitations. Both activities offer a healthy way to incorporate cardiovascular endurance training into your fitness routine. Both activities may be enjoyable. Both activities may not be suitable for people of all fitness levels. If, however, you are capable of doing both, you may decide one is better than the other.

Roller skating involves all major muscle groups, including your heart. With similar health benefits and calorie consumption to jogging, skating burns between 350 and 600 calories per hour depending on your weight and exertion level, but with considerably less impact shock to your body, according to research published in “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.” Also, roller skating is fast-paced and exciting, providing a challenging balance dimension to your workout, requiring your body to move in unexpected ways that stimulate different muscles and heighten your athletic abilities
